Neyyabhishekam Pooja
Neyyabhishekam, a significant ritual in the worship of Lord Ayyappa, involves the offering of ghee-filled coconuts. The ceremonial proceedings commence at 4 AM and persist until Ucha Pooja at 1 PM. Following the darshan of Lord Ayyappa and upa-prathistas, groups of pilgrims, guided by the senior-most member known as guru swamy, spread a viri (a sheet on the ground) and meticulously arrange the collected ghee-filled coconuts.
After bathing at Bhasmakkulam, the pond situated behind the sannidhanam, the team leader, typically a guru swamy, breaks all the ghee-filled coconuts and gathers the ghee in a vessel for the offering at the sree kovil (sanctum sanctorum).
Post Neyyabhishekam, the priest returns a portion of the consecrated ghee to the devotee, considering it as a divine prasadam. For those who do not bring ghee-filled coconuts, the Devaswom board provides the option of adiyashistam neyyu.
The symbolism behind the ritual lies in the ghee representing the human soul, merging with the Supreme Being through the abhishekam on Lord Ayyappa. The jeevatma is equated with ghee, while Lord Ayyappa embodies the paramatma.
Once the ghee is extracted from the coconut, the coconut itself takes on a symbolic meaning, representing jadam or a lifeless body. This explains why the coconut is subsequently offered in the expansive aazhi or fire-place in front of the temple.
Padi Pooja
Padi Pooja is a sacred ritual dedicated to the 18 holy steps, known as ‘pathinettampadi,’ and is observed on specific days following the floral bathing of the idol, referred to as ‘pushpabhiskeham.’ This ritual takes place in the evenings and is overseen by the tantri, with the presence of the melsanthi (priest). The hour-long ceremony involves adorning the Holy Steps with flowers and silk cloths, accompanied by the illumination of traditional lamps on each step. The culmination of the ritual occurs with the tantri performing ‘aarathi,’ marking the conclusion of this reverential practice.
Udayasthamana Pooja
The term ‘Udayasthamaya’ translates to ‘from sunrise to sunset,’ indicating worship conducted throughout the entire day. Udayasthamana pooja encompasses the period from dawn to dusk, spanning from the Nirmalyam ritual to the Athazha pooja. In addition to the regular nithya pooja, special ceremonies involving Archanas and Abhishekams are performed to seek the blessings of the Bhagavan (presiding deity) and fulfill the wishes of devotees. Among the total 18 poojas, 15 are completed before noon, and there are a total of 45 kalasabhishekams carried out during this extended worship period.
Kalasams Pooja
Sahasrakalasam:
Sahasra Kalasam is a sacred offering to Hariharaputhra (Sri Dharmashastha) in accordance with the Thantric Veda and Agama Shastras. This ritual aims to invoke blessings for the well-being of humanity. It involves a noble endeavor to gather all that is holy, such as incense, precious and semiprecious stones, the waters of the seven seas, and the sacred rivers. These elements are amalgamated into a holy kalasam (sacred pot) made of materials like gold, silver, or copper.
Ulsavabali:
Ulsava Bali rituals commence with the resonating sound of Paani, inviting the Bhoothaganams (associates of the presiding deity). The ceremony involves the sprinkling of cooked raw rice (Ulsava Bali Thooval) over the balikallu of the Bhoothaganams around the Naalambalam and Balikkalpura by the temple tantri. After completing the rice sprinkling over the Saptha Maathrukkal, the Thidambu of the presiding deity is taken out of the sanctum sanctorum for devotees to offer prayers. Ulsava Bali is a significant part of the annual festival at the Lord Ayyappa Temple.
Puspabhishekam:
Puspabhishekam is the act of showering flowers on Lord Ayyappa at Sabarimala. The ritual employs various flowers and leaves, including Tamara (lotus), Jamanthi (chrysanthemum), Arali, Tulsi (basil), Mulla (jasmine), and Kuvalam (bilva leaves). Devotees wishing to perform Pushpabhishekam at Sabarimala need to book in advance, with the associated cost being Rs.10,000/-.
Ashtabhishekam:
Ashtabhishekam is a significant offering to Lord Ayyappa at Sabarimala, involving eight items: Vibhuti, Milk, Honey, Panchamrutam, Tender coconut water, Sandalwood or Chandanam, Rosewater or Panineer, and Water. It’s essential to note that the specific items used may vary in Hindu temples.
Kalabhabhishekam:
Kalabhabhishekam is a crucial special pooja performed to strengthen the chaithanya (spiritual energy) of the deity. The tantri conducts the Kalabhakalasa pooja at the Nalambalam in the presence of the melsanthi. The ritual concludes with the Kalabhakalasabhishekam, where sandalwood paste is poured on the idol of Lord Ayyappa during the Ucha pooja.
Laksharchana:
Laksharchana involves the chanting and glorification of the Divine name in a group setting, with “Lak” representing 100,000. The tantri, assisted by the melsanthi and other priests, performs Laksharchana at the Sannidhanam. The ‘Brahmakalasam’ from the Laksharchana is then processed to the sanctum sanctorum for abhishekam before the uchapuja.
Sabarimala Rituals
Malayidal:
Embarking on a pilgrimage to Sabarimala is a journey that tests one’s senses. Pilgrims are expected to lead a simple, pious life known as ‘Vrutham’ for the successful completion of the pilgrimage. The initiation of ‘Vrutham,’ signifying a willingness to undertake austerity, begins with the wearing of a bead chain, locally known as ‘Malayideel.’ Pilgrims may wear a bead chain with the locket of Sree Ayyappan, symbolizing a commitment to a life free from worldly pleasures. Vices like smoking and alcohol consumption are strictly prohibited, and the pilgrim is required to observe conjugal abstinence. The Mala should be accepted after prayers from a temple priest or a Guru Swami, who is an individual having completed 18 Sabarimala pilgrimages. Alternatively, the Mala may be worn in one’s own prayer room at home and is taken off after completing the pilgrimage.
Mandala Vrutham:
Mandala Vrutham signifies austerity measures observed by followers and devotees of Lord Ayyappa for a period of 41 days, known as a Mandala. The ‘Vrutham’ period involves simple and pious living without any vices. Devotees commence wearing the Mala on a Saturday or the day of Uthram, the auspicious birth star of Sree Ayyappan. The 41-day ‘Vrutham’ aims to instill discipline and healthy practices, forming good habits through a combination of self-control and prayers. During this period, devotees are recommended to wear black clothes to symbolize detachment from material things, and activities like cutting hair, shaving facial hair, and cutting nails are forbidden.
Kettunirakkal:
Kettunirakkal is the ritual of preparing and packing ‘Irumudi kettu’ for the Sabarimala pilgrimage, guided by a guru swamy. Pilgrims carrying the Irumudi kettu on their heads are permitted to climb the 18 sacred steps to the temple, symbolizing their observance of austerities. During Kettunira, ghee is filled inside a coconut, symbolizing the draining out of worldly attachments and filling the mind with spiritual aspirations. This ghee-filled coconut, known as neyy-thenga, is a sacred offering for Lord Ayyappa. The front compartment of the bag is filled with the neyy-thenga and other sacred offerings, believed to be vibrant with spiritual power. The other compartment is filled with coconuts to be broken at various holy spots.
Petta Thullal:
Petta Thullal is a ritualistic sacred dance celebrating the victory of good over evil in the legend of Lord Ayyappa slaying the demon princess Mahishi. Traditionally performed by the Ambalappuzha team, Petta Thullal marks the beginning of the last leg of the annual Sabarimala pilgrimage season. The dance is initiated after sighting a kite in the skies and involves a ceremonial procession to the Sree Dharma Sastha Temple.
Traditional Path:
The traditional route to Sabarimala includes the challenging Erumeli route, considered the path taken by Ayyappan to subdue Mahishi. Pilgrims pass through significant spots such as Perur Thodu, Kaalaketti, Azhutha river, Azhutha hill, Inchipparakota, Karimala, and Pampa river valley, each holding religious significance. The journey teaches pilgrims the ups and downs of life and the resilience needed to reach the summit.
Ulsavam:
Ulsavam is the annual festival held at the Sabarimala temple during the Malayalam month of ‘Meenam’ or the Tamil month of ‘Panguni’ (March-April). Lasting for ten days, Ulsavam involves rituals like ‘Kodiyettam,’ ‘Ulsavabali,’ ‘Sree Bhootha Bali,’ ‘Pallivetta,’ and ‘Arattu.’ ‘Panguni Uthram,’ marking the birth star of Sree Ayyappan, concludes the annual festival.
